Studies have proven that trap-neuter-release is the single most successful method of stabilizing and maintaining healthy feral cat colonies with the least possible cost to local governments and residents, while providing the best life for the animals themselves.
Statewide, more than $50 million (largely from taxes) is spent by animal control agencies and shelters for cat-related expenses.

What We Do
Trap - Test - Alter - Release Program
A feral cat colony consists of cats that are not domesticated and strays that have been abandoned. Therefore, these cats often run from humans. Cats within the colony survive by hunting and accepting handouts. It is survival of the fittest and the weak usually do not survive. If these cats are not spayed and neutered, other feral cats will move in and take over the territory.

When we are notified of a colony, we attempt to stabilize the colony. Have-A-Heart traps are set to trap the cats. They are humane and the cats are not harmed or in any danger. Once they are trapped, the cats are taken to the veterinarian and are tested to ensure they are negative for feline leukemian and FIV. They are then spayed or neutered, vaccinated, the surgeon tips one of their ears so they can be indentified once they are released. They then are brought back to the caregiver's home where they will stay in "recovery cages" for several days and will then be released back into their habitat where they originally came from. At this point, the caregiver is now responsible for feeding and providing shelter for these cats for the rest of their lives.

Of course, we do come across friendly cats, and we do attempt to adopt them out to reliable homes. In addition, a friendly cat that cannot adapt to being inside would be adopted out to a farm, as long as the owner of tha farm supplies food and shelter. And,
kittens that are born to feral cats are fostered until they are old enough to be adopted.
